Gastric Balloon

Mr Mehta is an experienced and highly regarded surgeon based in Leeds, offering Gastric Balloons to those wanting a surgery-free weight loss solution

What is a Gastric Balloon?

A gastric balloon is a reversible non-surgical weight loss procedure. A deflated balloon is inserted through your mouth and into your stomach and a 50cc syringe is then used to fill the saline balloon with a sterile saline solution to the size of a grapefruit.

The balloon takes up enough space in your stomach to help you adapt to healthier portion sizes, therefore helping you to lose weight.

The balloon is removed 12 months later with a non surgical procedure.

About the Gastric Balloon

The gastric balloon has no sharp edges or protrusions that can irritate your stomach and the innovative design offers a smooth, soft and round shape to put your safety first and limit the risk of stomach ulcers.

Each gastric balloon is created with 7 layers of some of the highest medical grade silicone to ensure durability, so it can withstand digestive fluids and stomach acids with ease over the course of 12 months.

The balloon is designed to take up enough space in the stomach to help you improve portion control and therefore helping you feel full but not uncomfortable.

What past patients think…

Mr Mehta was very professional and informative throughout my consultation. He listened to my questions carefully and answered honestly and appropriately with the patients best interest at heart.

I proceeded to go head with procedure and have had no complications and a speedy recovery since.

Mr Mehta even called the hospital during the night out of his working hours to check on my progress. I would like to deeply thank Mr Mehta for being such a great surgeon. I could not have asked for any better. 👏🏼💕

I had been toying with the idea of a gastric band for years and finally built up the courage to go for a consultation.

I was very nervous about the procedure so I asked many questions.
Mr Mehta answered all of my questions open and honestly putting my mind at rest, with a relaxed and friendly manner.

I decided to go ahead with the surgery and had my procedure May of this year. Everything went to plan and I am now seeing great results.

Thank you Mr Mehta

How is the Gastric Balloon procedure performed?

Step 1

After you are sedated and comfortable, Mr Mehta inserts a flexible tube (endoscopy) through your mouth and into your stomach.

Step 2

Once the flexible tube (endoscopy) reaches your  stomach, a balloon is gently guided into position.

Step 3

Once the balloon is in position, it is filled with a sterile saline solution, inflating it to the desired size.

Step 4

Once the balloon is inflated to the desired size, Mr Mehta retracts the tube, leaving the balloon in situ for 12 months.

Step 5

After 12 months, Mr Mehta will remove the balloon by using the same technique when initially inserting it.

Is the Gastric Balloon suitable for me?

You should give consideration to a balloon if your BMI is more than 27, and you have not been successful in losing weight by changing your lifestyle.  The gastric balloon is not suitable if you have had an operation on your stomach, or have a stomach ulcer, severe acid reflux, hiatus hernia and certain other medical conditions.

What does it feel like?

The Gastric Balloon takes up space in your stomach and it will make you feel full after eating a very small meal. It helps you learn portion control over the 12 months with it in place in your stomach.

It typically takes a few days for your body to adjust to the gastric balloon, and you may experience nausea, vomiting and reflux however this typically goes away after a few days.

When will I see results?

The weight loss varies between patients, however most weight loss occurs within the first three months after the gastric balloon placement.

The balloon can be kept in place for 12 months to help you lose weight and make lifestyle changes.

How big is the Gastric Balloon?

The Orbera gastric balloon can be tailored to your stomach to take up the right amount of space, however at about the size and shape of a grapefruit, each balloon can be filled with as little as 400ml or as much as 700ml based on your stomach.

Is it possible to adjust the size of the Gastric Balloon?

The size of the Orbera balloon is adjusted during the procedure according to how it fits in your stomach.  But, after the procedure the size cannot be altered.  It is not possible to put more liquid into the balloon if you feel that you do not have enough fullness.

Will I be awake for the procedure?

You will be awake throughout the procedure taking place, however we may sedate you to keep you relaxed and comfortable.

How much does the gastric balloon cost?

The total cost of a gastric balloon is £4,780 and this covers the cost of the procedure and aftercare.

How is the Gastric Balloon removed?

The gastric balloon is removed by doing an endoscopy, just as for putting in the balloon.  Using special equipment, the balloon is deflated and removed through your mouth.  You have to be in the hospital for a few hours only.

See the video illustrating the removal of a gastric balloon.
